In Memory of Don Walston

Don Walston, a friend and mentor and so much more to so many people, peacefully left this world on Thursday, July 12, 2018.

Born in Smithfield in 1927, Don wore many hats during his lifetime, including hardware store proprietor, hotel owner, civil servant, veteran and mason. He was also a collector of many things, most of which would be decoys.  Don collected decoys from all regions of North America, but was mainly known to me for his ability to unearth great Core Sound decoys, with help from his wife Patsy.

A long-time member of the Core Sound Decoy Carvers Guild, he spent many years on the Board of Directors and also served as the chairman of the Core Sound Decoy Festival auction for many years.  He was a key player in the formation of the Carolina Decoy Collectors Association, as well as a great story teller and friend. He was generous and caring man, and he will be missed dearly.
